Investigator Richard Wendell Humphrey

Baldwin County District Attorney’s Office

End of Watch: September 3, 2021

Investigator Richard Humphrey died from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty.

Investigator Humphrey had served with the Baldwin County District Attorney's Office for four years. He had over 27 years in law enforcement, having previously served with the Madison County Sheriff's Office in Tennessee as well as the Foley Police Department and Bay Minnette Police Department in Alabama. He is survived by his son, daughter, ten grandchildren, his parents, one brother, and two sisters.

Police Officer Brandon Wyatt Ard

Orange Beach Police Department

End of Watch: September 3, 2021

Police Officer Brandon Ard died from complications as the result of contracting a communicable disease in a presumed exposure while assigned to Beach Patrol.

Officer Ard was a U.S. Navy veteran and he had served with the Orange Beach Police Department for almost 17 years and had served in law enforcement for almost 25 years. He is survived by his two daughters.

Corrections Officer Maurice Jarrod "Reese" Jackson

Robertsdale Police Department

End of Watch: August 3, 2021

Corrections Officer Maurice Jackson died from complications of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty.

Officer Jackson served with the Robertsdale Police Department for four years. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Deputy Sheriff William Henry Smith, Jr

Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office

End of Watch: Sunday, June 6, 2021

Deputy Sheriff Bill Smith drowned while attempting a water rescue of three distressed swimmers in the Gulf of Mexico off of Fort Morgan Road.

He and another deputy entered the water in an attempt to rescue the three swimmers. Deputy Smith also became distressed during the rescue. Deputy Smith was taken to a nearby medical facility where he was pronounced dead. The other deputy and all three swimmers were also treated at local facilities.

Deputy Smith had served with the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office for seven years. He had previously served with the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office and had served as a firefighter for 30 years.

Sergeant Charles Kerry Mitchum

Loxley Police Department

End of Watch: January 26, 2015

Sergeant Kerry Mitchum was killed in a single vehicle crash on Oak Lane, near Highway 59, in Stapleton.

He was en route to the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office firing range at approximately 3:00 pm when his department vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree. He was flown to the University of South Alabama Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.

Investigator Michael Dale Stockwell

Orange Beach Police Department

End of Watch: September 17, 2013

Investigator Mike Stockwell was killed in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of the Foley Beach Expressway and County Road 12, in Foley, at approximately 9:00 pm.

His unmarked department vehicle collided with another vehicle in the intersection. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle was uninjured.

Investigator Stockwell had served in law enforcement for 20 years.

Deputy Sheriff Scott Jeffrey Ward

Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office

End of Watch: November 23, 2012

Deputy Sheriff Scott Ward was shot and killed after he and two other deputies responded to a domestic disturbance call involving an emotionally disturbed person in the 11800 block of Mallard Lane shortly after 4:00 pm.

The man's mother called police after arriving at his home when she was unable to contact him by phone. Upon her arrival she was unable to calm him down.

The deputies were speaking to the subject on the front porch when he suddenly produced a handgun and opened fire. Deputy Ward and one other deputy were shot before the subject was killed by return fire.

All three deputies were wearing their vests.

Both wounded deputies were flown to the University of South Alabama Medical Center in critical condition. Deputy Ward succumbed to his wounds.

Deputy Ward was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve. He had served with the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office for 15 years and had previously served with the Prichard Police Department. He is survived by his wife.

Police Officer Raymundo Dominguez

Bay Minette Police Department

End of Watch: June 11, 2010

Police Officer Raymundo Dominguez suffered a fatal heart attack after responding to a reckless endangerment incident.

After clearing from the call, he was requested to work three hours of overtime directing traffic at a local event. He began to feel ill during the assignment and returned home when the assignment completed.

The following day he was found unresponsive at home.

Officer Dominguez was survived by his wife and two sons.

Deputy Sheriff Howard Edward Dutton

Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office

End of Watch: October 2, 1987

Deputy Dutton was shot and killed while responding to assist the Robertsdale Police Department on a suicide call. Deputy Dutton responded with several officers in the area behind a store off Chicago Street in Robertsdale. The suspect was sitting behind an abandoned building with a shotgun. While negotiating with officers, the suspect fired a single shot striking Deputy Dutton in the upper abdomen. Officers returned fire on the suspect striking him several times. Deputy Dutton was transported to South Baldwin Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Deputy Dutton had served with Baldwin County Sheriff's Office for four years and had previously served in the United States Army Reserve as a Master Sergeant. He was survived by his wife, daughter, and two sisters.

Town Marshal Joseph W. Smith

Bay Minette Police Department

End of Watch: August 17, 1910

Marshal Joseph Smith was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a suspect.

The man was convicted of murdering Marshal Smith and executed by hanging in the Baldwin County Jail on May 31, 1912.

Marshal Smith was survived by his wife.

Deputy Sheriff James R. Stewart

Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office

End of Watch: April 6, 1895

Deputy Sheriff James Stewart was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a robbery suspect.

The suspect escaped after killing Deputy Stewart. On July 3rd, 1895, the man shot and killed Sheriff Ed McMillan, of the Escambia County Sheriff's Office in Florida.

The subject was later shot and killed by a constable in Brewton, Florida.

Deputy Sheriff Abram S. Johnson

Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office

End of Watch: December 26, 1881

Deputy Sheriff Abram Johnson was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a murder suspect.

He was shot in the chest and died a short time later. The suspect was also killed during the shootout.
